Accra

If you are making a tour through Ghana, the capital Accra is most likely your starting point. This is the beating heart of Ghana: you can relax from the long flight and get used to the African lifestyle. There are also a number of attractions in Accra that you can check; be sure to check out the National Museum, Osu Castle and historic Jamestown. Accra is also known for its vibrant nightlife, so be sure to spend a night out in one of the many nightclubs.

Cape Coast

One of the most loaded sights in Ghana can be found along the Atlantic coast. Cape Coast and the surrounding area was the center of the slave trade in West Africa and was the place where African slaves were traded. A history in which the Dutch also played a large part, and therefore mandatory reading during your tour through Ghana. Also visit the infamous slave fortress in Elmina, where you get a penetrating insight into history.

Kakum National Park

In addition to spotting wildlife, you can also make beautiful trips through the rainforest in Ghana. For that you have to be in the Kakum National Park, which is located a short distance north of Cape Coast. The park consists of pristine rainforest where various hiking trails have been mapped out. The highlight is the part where you can walk over a wobbly rope bridge between the treetops.

Volta Region

The Volta Region is the area around Lake Volta, the largest artificial lake in the world. The lake was created after the construction of a large dam, and over the years a spectacularly beautiful landscape has formed here. Today, the Volta Region offers all the ingredients for a wonderful holiday, but few tourists visit this part of the country. A shame, because you can take beautiful walks, view waterfalls and swim in the lake. One of the highlights in this area is the beautiful Wli waterfall.

Kumasi

The heart of the rich Ashanti culture. You should definitely visit the Kejetia Market. This is West Africa's largest market and it's great to walk around and look around. Other attractions in Kumasi are the Royal Palaces and the fort. For some good food stop at Ike's cafe and grill. 

Mole National park

Mole is rich in biodiversity and home to some 742 vascular plant species, over 90 mammal species including 5 primatespecies, of which species of conservation and tourist interest include Elephant, Buffalo, Kob, Western Hartebeest, Roan Antelope, Defassa Waterbuck, Oribi, Bohor Reedbuck and Red-flanked Duiker. Rare and endangered species include the Yellow-backed Duiker, Black and White Colobus Monkey, Leopard and Lion. The Park is also home to 334 bird species, 33 reptiles, 9 amphibian species, and some 120 butterfly species.

The Park has the most viable elephant population in Ghana, and as such, is a hotspot for elephant conservation. It is also said that the Park has a unique breed of elephant, which are not hostile, not aggressive or insecure, compared to other elephant populations in the rest of Africa. 

Busua

Enough about the interior of Ghana, because let's not forget that the country is right on the Atlantic coast and therefore has plenty to offer for beach lovers. If you are going backpacking in Ghana, you should head for the relaxed coastal town of Busua. Travelers flock here for its relaxed atmosphere and tropical setting. You will find cozy bungalows on the beach and it is one of the best places for surfing.
